Chapter Fifteen

It seemed they were to ignore the kiss.

The Kiss.

Her mind wouldn’t cease uttering it as though it were some important man’s title, like The Duke.

Charlotte peered at Mr. Morgan’s back for some time. Upon his knees in front of the bread oven, his shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbows, his hair in disarray. She glanced around the kitchen to spy his jacket hanging on the back of the straw chair and his coat back on the hook next to hers. It was all of two belongings, but the sight struck her deep in her stomach. She’d been alone for so long it hadn’t even occurred to her she might get to share this life with someone. Cozy images of things in twos had no place in her life.

Especially when those things belonged to Mr. Morgan.

The Kiss or not, Mr. Morgan was not the sort of man to settle down and she did not have time for dalliances. Which did not explain why she had let him kiss her again…

He grunted and set a brick in place, either unaware of her or deliberately ignoring her. She would wager the latter. After all, what could he say? Forgive me for kissing you like no man has ever kissed you before?

She didn’t doubt how it had impacted him, either. She’d seen how he’d looked at her, she’d heard the tremor in his voice when he uttered her name. When she dashed back upstairs, she swore she felt him through the floorboards, able to sense him debating whether to follow her or to remain.

He’d remained and she’d laid there stiff as a board until the greying light of morning flickered through the gaps in her curtains.

“What are you doing?”

He twisted briefly then slapped some mortar on the next brick. “Fixing your oven,” he said without looking at her.

“I can see that, but I was going to get someone to do that today.”

Mr. Morgan rose to his feet and wiped his hands on a cloth then hung it from the waistband of his trousers. She sucked in a breath so hard it felt like it scalded her lungs. Standing in front of her was no businessman, no rogue, no seducer of fine ladies. Shirt open at the neck and his forearms slightly speckled with dirt, he offered an intriguing combination of utter handsomeness and hardworking allure.

Curse him. Could he not go back to being a flirtatious rake who did nothing but drink in clubs and bed high-ranking ladies?

“I know you are a strong, independent woman...” He lifted both palms. “But I have some time—Parliament isn’t in Session yet—and the sooner you get this fixed, the sooner you can get back to business.”

Charlotte opened her mouth and closed it. Taking a breath, she smiled slightly. “I am...but I appreciate it.” She peered behind him. “You do know what you are doing, do you not?”

He blinked a few times, then smirked. “I have worked with my hands in the past, yes. You might not think my beginnings that humble but I went straight to work at the docks as a young man.
